Medical Treatment for Obesity
Obesity Medicine consultation services is provided by Dr. Porrata where she addresses the causes behind obesity and being overweight. Obesity Medicine is a subspecialty of medicine similar to others that are better known like cardiology, dermatology, gastroenterology and others. Same as in any of those specialties, in Obesity Medicine patients are evaluated, diagnosed and treated for the particular ailment that took them to see that doctor. There is never a “one size fits all” solution for the problem. Obesity Medicine is not the exception.
Understanding and Treating Obesity
Every individual has a different cause or group of medical issues that will manifest as overweight or obesity. That is the reason why, unless properly diagnosed and treated, overweight and obesity will not resolve. This particular area of medicine has not been formally considered until a few years ago. The medical community now understands that excessive weight is only a manifestation of a much bigger and complex problem that needs to be treated. The problem can be originated in lifestyle, as well as a sleep disorder, hormonal problem, medication treatment, metabolic problem or a combination of a few of this issues. And, as well as any other area of medicine, it can have a clinical and/or a surgical approach. Patients normally consult for “weight loss’ and quickly understand that calories and exercise are not the problem nor the solution, but attacking the root of the problem with appropriate diagnosis and treatment is the true approach.
